19th C. Solomon islands club with idol face
19th C. Solomon islands club with idol face
A very rare Solomon Islands club with a carved anthropomorphic idol face on the top part of the front side of the club. A carved ridge starts at the top of the face and goes over the top edge of the club. A Solomon Islands club in the collection of British Museum have a carved mouth on the club with a ridge between the mouth and the top, that club does also have a carved idol face on the handle. Another club in BM collection with a blurry photo have the same ridge starting from what looks like 2 circle eyes and a line mouth. Our club have carved sloping edges against the carved middle ridge. That can be seen on another club in the British Museum collection collected in the 1860´s. Photos of the British Museum clubs can be seen after the photos on our club. Estimated age cirka mid 19th Century. Carved in black palm wood. The club is in good condition but has a very old layer of shellack, probably made by the first Swedish owner in the end of 19th Century. Most of the shellack has fallen of on the front side, but is more obvious on the back side. It can be removed easily but is also part of the clubs history.
