Palm wine jug, Zande/Mangbetu, D. R. Congo

Jug made in terracotta by the Zande people (or Mangbetu). This unusual jug with 4 handles is probably made for ceremonial use or to be part in a shrine.

Estimated age is 1920´s - 1930´s or older. Very good condition.

22,5 cm, 8,9 in

Provenance: Åke Axell (1931-2013) inherited this jug from his father Seve Axell (1907-1982). Seve Axell worked for Unesco and WHO in Africa, Persia and Korea. He bought a lot of objects in situ when working in different parts of Africa.
