Moai Papa, female figure, Easter Island

Finely carved “Moai Papa” , female figure, with flattened body and fully modeled head. What appears to be the figures hair consists of a carved image depicting a face of a spirit. Carved in hard wood (probably Toromiro pine). Eyes made of a ring of Moluscus shell with obsidian inlays. Varied reddish-brown patina. Rapa Nui culture, Easter Island. Mid 19th century or older.

Provenance: Swedish family collection. Probably collected in situ by one of the participants of the Swedish Vanadis expedition 1883-1885.
