Shoji Hamada Square Tenmoku Plate, Mashiko Japan

Shoji Hamada ( 1894-1978) important Japanese artist of the 20th century studio pottery and a major figure of the Mingei folk-art movement. In 1955 he was designated a “Living National Treasure”.

A large square stoneware plate with trailed pattern in iron and covered in tenmoku glaze.

Provenance: Private south Swedish collection. This plate was a gift from the family to the previous owner cirka 60 years ago, probably bought at a Hamada exhibition at Nordiska Kompaniet, NK, Stockholm.
