A Lacquer Kobako (Small Box) And Cover. Japan

A lacquer box with grooved corners, close fitting cover and pewter rims. Decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e, takamaki-e on a black lacquer and sparse gold nashiji ground. Nashiji interior. The whole outside is decorated with hagi (bush clover) leaves and flowers in different sizes which make the three dimensional design more expressive together with the bulged takamaki-e technique. Edo period (1615-1868).
