Lacquered hide dhal, north India, 18-19th Century

Black lacquered buffalo hide Dhal shield in excellent condition. Copper gilt bosses and crescent. Two old collection numbers painted on the shield.

Diameter 50 cm

Provenance: Rolf de Maré (1888-1964) Swedish art collector and leader of the Ballets Suédois in Paris 1920-1925. In 1933 he founded the world´s first dance museum in Paris. He opened the Dance Museum in Stockholm 1953.  He travelled during his life all over the world to document dances, collect art and dance related items.
